Chapter 5
Evan
Cradling a glass of vodka in the empty hotel bar, I check the time on my phone. The taxi is due to pick me up in half an hour.
By some miracle, I managed to get a flight for midnight. I haven't told Jade yet, as I don’t want to break up her fun, but I got the girls a transfer to an executive suite as way of an apology. They'll get the keys in the morning.
I feel bad disappearing with so much as a word. But the damage I’d cause by staying far outweighs my vanishing act. Jade knows that things are busy at work, and I’m often called in at short notice, so it shouldn't come as a huge shock. Besides, it’s obvious I cramp her style. She’s not the girl who used to cling to me as we enjoyed daddy-daughter time. She’s an adult now, with her own life.
As start to finish the last dregs of my vodka, which goes down like warm medicine, I feel the presence of someone slowly walk behind me. I don’t look.
“Hey there,” a woman’s voice says in a low whisper. I briefly glance to my left and see the lady who got into the elevator when we first arrived at the hotel.
She’s dressed impeccably—wearing a smart white blouse and black pencil skirt—and she smells like the entire perfume department of Macy's.
I take my final sip of vodka and turn my attention back to the bar, having no real interest in striking up a conversation. “Hey.”
“What’s your name?” she asks. “I’m Tracy.”
I look down at her manicured fingernails as she pushes her hand toward me.
Fuck it.
I have a few minutes to kill.
Taking her hand, which is soft and feels nice in mine, I shoot her a half-assed smile. “I’m Evan.”
She smiles, pulls off her coat, and takes the stool next to me. There’s a brief pause before I catch on to what she’s after. I get bartender’s attention. “Another vodka, and…?” I look at her. She asks for a dry martini.
As the bartender walks off to fix up the drinks, the woman, whose name I’ve already forgot, brushes a loose strand of blonde hair past her ear and crosses her legs. I’m distracted momentarily as I examine them. She has great long legs and looks really good, but I feel nothing—not even the slightest attraction or curiosity. Pretty odd for a guy who hasn't enjoyed the warmth of a pretty woman in so long.
“You here with your daughters?” she asks.
“Only one of them is my daughter,” I reply, almost defensively.
“Oh. Is the other her school friend?”
My brows lower. “School friend?”
She smiles again.
“They’re not school friends. They're both in their twenties,” I say. “What about you? Alone?”
She nods and then slowly runs a finger along her collarbone, trying to draw my eyes down to her cleavage.
I breathe out and lean back. “Look, lady, I—”
“Mr. Bradley!”
My head snaps to my right. “Riley?”
She’s standing at the entrance to the bar, holding herself in her arms and crying.
